FORMATION RESOURCES FOR YOUR FAMILY
Reading the Bible together
One of the best ways to grow as a family of faith is to read and reflect on God's Word, the Bible. The Bible is literally God speaking to us, so spending time with the Scriptures and teaching your children the stories and to learn from them is a marvelous way to help your children grow in faith.
For young children, buy a Children's Bible and begin helping them become familiar with the stories of Adam and Eve, Noah, Jospeh, Abraham, David, Ruth, Naomi in the Old Testament and the stories of Jesus, Mary and his Disciples in the New Testament. Read a story before bedtime or at the dinner table. Children love stories!
For children who can read, especially middle school and high school, read the weekend scriptures together and talk about what it might mean to your life. Here are some websites with some great and creative ways to do this.

Teaching Children about the Faith
Articles and ideas to help you teach the faith to your children.
Teaching the Virtues to your children By teaching your children virtue, you help them learn how to regulate their own behavior and reactions to situations in positive ways. Virtue is the basis for all moral life, as well as a life modeled after Jesus Christ. (the school uses this program to great success but they also have a home study version)
The Reasons for our Belief - Credible Catholic. Fr. Spitzer has put together a number of videos to help young people know that science and faith do go together - you can use reason and come to faith. He addresses some of the big questions people tend to ask when it comes to faith in God - and show you that God really exists and that he cares for you.

The Rite of Christian Initiation for Children (RCIC)
Jesus said, "Let the children come to me" (Matthew 19:14.)
Each year a number of children and adults enter the church during the Easter Vigil at IHM. Like the adults, children, who have reached the age of reason and have not been baptized enter into the Catholic Christian Community through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.
The RCIA process for adults is adapted for children and includes the same periods and rites. IHM's children and adults first experience the Pre-catechumenate period followed by the Rite of Welcoming and Acceptance. Secondly, they are involved in the Catechumenate period followed by the Rite of Election. Thirdly, they enter the Enlightenment period followed by the Rite of Initiation. Fourth, they enter a period of mystogogia.
If you would like to learn more about RCIA adapted for children, please email or call Jen Brown at 393-3033.
