New Furniture Press Release!
Immaculate Heart of Mary Awarded Funds for New School Furniture
IHM to invest over $500,000 in New Furniture for our School over the Next Few Months
LANSING, Mich. — Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) is pleased to announce the acceptance of funds from the Michigan Department of Education’s (MDE) Learning Loss program. The MDE created a Learning Loss program to help schools, public and private cope after Covid-19. This program funds schools to address unfished learning from the loss during the pandemic. Due to the makeup of our student body, IHM was eligible for $556,000 of funds.
IHM leadership worked around the clock to ensure these funds went to the best possible place, requiring multiple rounds of approval from the state before an agreement was made. A proposal was submitted for some of the available funds to be designated for faculty wages, and another was submitted for a new HVAC system. Unfortunately, the MDE denied these requests because they were deemed not to fall under the scope of the funds. IHM leadership then submitted a proposal to get new furniture for the parish facilities used by the school, which the MDE approved.
“I'm very proud of our staff for all the hard work they put into making this project a reality. Because of their efforts, we'll be able to update our school and parish without being a burden to our finances,” said Fr. Jim Rolph. “I'm also incredibly grateful to our team of volunteers who are working diligently to implement this project smoothly and efficiently. When we use our gifts and work together as a team, truly amazing things are possible.”
With these funds, almost all the classrooms, gathering spaces, and chapel furniture used as part of the education given by IHM will be updated. The furniture has been purchased from Lakeshore Furniture, a company dedicated to helping schools. They have over 60 years of experience furnishing classrooms, with child safety as their number one priority. Lakeshore Furniture products are developed by teachers to foster discovery, exploration, and learning. We are very confident in their work and the furniture they will supply.
A team has been working behind the scenes to iron out all the logistics and make this a smooth transition. The plan is to begin the project on Tuesday, January 21st, and complete it by Friday, January 31st. This should give our staff and volunteers ten days to transition seamlessly. To disrupt the student's school day as little as possible, the chapel and gathering spaces will be used as “flex spaces” for our students to use as classrooms while theirs are being updated.
In the coming months, additional furniture updates will be made in the gathering spaces and chapel, which are often used as flex spaces for students. These updates are currently planned for February. More information and updates to this timeline will be released in the coming weeks!
